Royal Cricketers Tour, August 2014
Wednesday 30th July 2014

Old Royalists Association in the United Kingdom hosted two present day Royal Cricketers (Randev Pathirana and Thiran Dhanapala) over a period of six weeks in August this year. The youngsters were selected by the Royal College cricket advisory committee in Sri Lanka based on their performances in 2013/14 season.

Randev and Thiran played four games for old Royalists Cricket Club (ORCC) in the Surrey league, United Kingdom. Both of them participated in the Royal Thomian-UK and Festival of Cricket (FOC) in the UK.  They came up with some excellent performances with Randev scoring a fifty in a Surrey league game and continued his good form taking four wickets and top scoring at the Royal-thomian as well as scoring heavily in the FOC. Thiran scored a century in a Surrey league game and played his role at Royal-Thomian and FOC very effectively. More importantly we believe they gained valuable experience in playing in English conditions and had the exposure to English culture and history of the country. They also had the opportunity to tour Lords Cricket Ground (Organised by the former Royal skipper Mr Asitha Jayaweera), tour of London, Scotland, Liverpool and had the exposure to international cricket in the UK when they went to see the first day of England – India Test match in Nottingham. The members of Old Royalists Cricket club organised practise sessions for the youngsters at the world class indoor facility at the Oval cricket ground. We hope this experience would help these young men to achieve greater things during their school career and possibly motivate them to continue their Cricket and play for Sri Lanka in not too distant future. We also would like to acknowledge that Thiran made his debut for Sri Lanka against the visiting Australian under 19 team, helping the team to win the one day series.

While cricketing side of things went very smoothly, we also observed two young men with exemplary conduct befitting the image of the country and Royal College. They both made positive impressions on many people they met, making a conscious effort to talk to people of varied vintage from Royal as well as from other schools, always with due respect and politeness. They were model ambassadors of our country of birth and Royal College. We are indeed proud that Old Royalists were able to host them for few weeks and provide them with an opportunity that would surely make a positive impact in their lives.

The ORAUK sponsored bats for the youngsters for the 2014/15 cricket season with help from Cricket direct, United Kingdom at a heavily discounted price. We would like to thank the president Mr Mohammed Hussain and all those members of the ORAUK who helped in numerous ways to make this initiative a success. We also would like to express our gratitude to the Cricket direct UK, Cricket advisory committee headed by Mr Jagath Fernando and the principal of Royal College Mr. Upali Gunasekera for their whole hearted support.

We look forward to their performances in the upcoming season and hope the exposure gained will help them bring glory to the college and country in the years to come.
